New book about doulas: 'Gentle Birth Companions' by Adela Stockton

Marking ten years since the arrival of the doula in the UK, Gentle Birth Companions tells the story of the doula movement beyond the US for the first time.

A comprehensive account of the doula’s origins, attributes and credentials is supported by historical and socio-political comment on the UK, European and Australian doula networks. The author explains why expectant women and birthing families need doulas, and presents informed discussion on the implications of the doula role for midwifery practice. Interjected throughout with lively comment and stories from working doulas, Gentle Birth Companions is set to become a key reference within its field.

'Dula' means 'to sit' in Sotho

Interestingly, the word 'dula' appears in the South African Sesotho language, meaning 'to sit'.
