About Adela

Born in Perth, Scotland, in 1961, my early work experience as a TEFL teacher (Peru & Portugal), duly informed my later practice as a midwife (Edinburgh, London, Stranraer, Madagascar & Glasgow). A personal use of homeopathic medecine led to my training with the Faculty of Homeopathy & British Institute of Homeopathy, and in 2004, I was awarded a Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship to examine the integration of homeopathy in maternity care in Cuba.
I have been writing since I can remember and have been involved in childbirth related work for the past 18 years. The Royal College of Midwives journal published my first article in 1997 and the ecstatic experience of my daughter's gentle 'undisturbed' birth, at home in water, inspired me to establish Birth Consultancy Services in 2001. This led me out of midwifery and towards working as a doula and childbirth homeopath. In 2003, I began preparing women to work as doulas through my Birth Consultancy Mindful Doulas Course (Doula UK Approved).
As well as guiding new doulas on their journey, I continue to write and speak about the role of the doula and other key ways of protecting gentle birth. My latest book Birth Space, Safe Place: emotional wellbeing through pregnancy and birth (Findhorn Press 2009) is available through the publisher (see side menu) or principal online outlets. My upcoming book Gentle Birth Companions: doulas serving humanity (see my blog) will be published in 2010.
I live with my husband and daughter in rural South West Scotland. We strive to live sustainably, growing produce as well as trees for fuel. A longterm commitment to the practice of tai chi keeps me working from within and I have recently re-discovered horseriding, this time from the natural perspective.
